Physical therapists evaluate and treat balance disorders. They are experts in detection of even the most finite movement deficits; they work to train effective, precise movement patterns for daily living or professional activities, such as competitive sports.
Physical therapists also play a critical role in pain control. They are essential care providers for persons with musculoskeletal conditions and can greatly improve quality of life. Functional movement techniques taught by physical therapists prevent injury or help restore and recover movement and strength that existed prior to illness or injury.
Occupational therapists often work to increase fine motor precision and upper extremity control needed for participation in life and work. Individuals must be able to sit, stand, move, and manipulate their environment to be able to: a) get dressed; b) take medication; c) drive; d) shop for groceries; e) care for or socialize with loved ones, or f) use work equipment, such as a computer.
For these reasons, occupational therapists are integral to quality of life and engagement in life. Occupational therapists work with all ages, and they evaluate and treat barriers to activities of daily living across complex diagnoses.
Speech therapists play a critical role in unique areas of care, such as management of resonance and feeding amid velopharyngeal incompetency and/or cleft palate. A speech therapist may also place a voice prosthesis following removal of the larynx due to cancer or a speaking valve amid mechanical ventilation, re-routing exhalation so that an individual can speak even when tracheostomized. A speech therapist can help an individual to eat by mouth (versus tube) in a least-risk manner amid life-limiting illness.
Speech therapists impact quality of life in vital ways – contributing to communication and functional eating and drinking following illness or injury and in the context of both congenital and acquired conditions.
